Quick Highlights
Square Footage - 2,200 sq ft
Project Scope - Rosin paper wall protection, surface profile grind / SikaLevel Rapid Patch / Sikaflex 1CSL joint fill, 100% solids epoxy, cratered metallic epoxy, high wear matte topcoat.
Initial Walkthrough and Prep
Saw cuts cleaned out and filled with Sikaflex 1CSL to accept concrete movement. Chunked out concrete repaired using SikaLevel Rapid Patch. Entire surface grind to accept next step epoxy primer application.
1st Coat Primer
100% solids moisture mitigating primer for higher moisture retention vapor barrier applied. Sanded the following day to knock off the gloss so metallic epoxy can then be applied.
2nd Coat Cratered Metallic Epoxy
Designer metallic epoxy applied after floor sanding and taping rosin paper to protect baseboard trim and walls from application. 2,200 sq ft basement was completed with some longer hours into the evening so process could be done as timely as possible.
Total space was broken into several different rooms that included main area, bedroom with walk-in closet, entertainment room, home gym, and utility room, and a space for storage. It was really fun to see the process start to turn into fruition. All of the hours of preparation of the floor starts to take shape! Metallic epoxy is 100% solids epoxy with metallic mica pigments mixed in. Navy Blue used for this application has the color name of Dark Sea. Once cured, there is a nice gloss shine.
Final Coat Matte Urethane Topcoat
Surface protection was important. A metallic floor could be left without a clear coat, but it's highly recommended a clear topcoat is used. Sometimes the metallic pigment used for the coating stays at the surface, and we wouldn't want you to track that though your space. Also - a clearcoat serves as an outer layer wear coat that protects the underlying metallic finish. This gives more longevity allowing for the full epoxy floor coating system to last longer.
Matte urethane topcoat with built in non-skid for higher scratch resistance was applied as the final coat. This satin clear coat really mattes out the gloss and cuts down on the shine as you can see from the photos.
Excellent choice for high traffic areas as we see it becoming more and more popular. Great for basements, garages, retail, salons, restaurants, offices, commercial, and the automotive market to name a few. Slip resistance is also provided from the subtle non-skid aggregate that is mixed into the coating before it is applied. Super fun to have been able to be a part of this build! 🔨
